What does the Lenny face mean?

Overtime, ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) has come to be recognized as an emoji that conveys the emotion of a mischievous mood or sometimes implies sexual innuendo. There are so many variations of ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) on the Internet today, that the face really mean lots of different things depending on which variation you choose.

Where did the Lenny text emoji come from?

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) First Appears on

The first appearance of Lenny was posted to a finish forum called on the 18th of November 2012. Unfortunately the post no longer exists. This was the original post location was here
but unfortunately the post now redirects to the main internal category of the site.

Why was Lenny Created?

The administrators of the forum asked if they should change the settings on their spam detector. This was because users of the forum were complaining about seeing too many posts in forum threads.

One anonymous user decided to respond to the administrators question by saying “this thread is leaking from the heavens” followed by the first ever time the emoji ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) was seen.

A new emoticon was born. Other users in the thread seen
the text emoji ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) and become very excited! They began spamming the thread. Some made a copy of the emoji, others started variations they had learned to create of the emoji with different types of eyes and mouth. This playful spamming and creativity continued for over 3 days!

How did it become so popular?

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Appears on 4chan

By the end of the first day ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) started to appear on one of the largest forums on the internet called 4chan. 4chan users went crazy! They also got really excited and started spamming the board, copying and pasting the emoji and variations of the emoji they had created. The spamming got so bad that numerous 4chan users were eventually banned for their bad behavior!

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Appears on Reddit

Next a Redditor posted a reddit a post titled “So I guess this is a thing now?” The Redditor posted an image of Lenny from the 4chan forum. Our guess is he had to post an image because he did not know how to create Lenny using Unicode and was not aware that he could just copy and paste the emoji. Some redditors suggested that the emoji looked like Bob the builder! What do you think?

Lenny Spreads all over the internet!

Later that day for some crazy reason 4chan users had invaded Reddit’s Isreal sub-reddit, spamming the sub-reddit with ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) , it got so bad that some redditors started to refer to the emoticon as the “le Palestine face.”

The emoji quickly spread to games forums, Yahoo, Tumbler and Facebook. Within 3 days, Lenny had gone viral

Why is ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) called a Lenny face?

We cannot know for sure exactly how the emoji got his name. Someone got their voice reader to read ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) and the voice said Deg Deg. A user mentioned this in a post as a possible name. Some people say a thread was started in a Reddit forum to name the ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) emoji.

Evidence seems to point to members of the 4chan community coming up with the name for Lenny almost accidentally! Let’s just say 4chan members viewed Reddit members as being a big silly or clueless. 4chan members refereed to Reddit members with ‘le’. This is because redditors were so into comics in 2012. Most of these comics were prefixed with the word “le”. It was an inside joke in the 4 chan community.

When new people visited 4chan and asked what was the face called. 4chan members began to tease newbies who asked what the
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) emoji name was called. They replied saying the name was called “le” lenny! That’s how Lenny’s name was born. It was sarcastic joke that stuck.
